COMMUNITY COACHING

A thriving community coaching Programme.

ENGAGE, EXPERIENCE, EXCEL!

The programme aims to take Basketball into schools that wouldn’t otherwise be able to offer the sport to its pupils.  Our club coaches deliver weekly sessions to schools to engage with young people to provide a positive first experience of basketball and sport, our sessions promote teamwork, respect, co-ordination, role models and leadership skills.

The programme objectives are:

  • To forge links with schools and organisations throughout the city to raise the profile of the sport.
  • To provide young people outside the club footprint, a positive first experience of basketball whilst encouraging physical activity.
  • To provide a clear and inclusive pathway for players, coaches, teachers and parents to be involved in basketball and the club.
  • To run F.A.B Camps in addition to school visits where children/young people can come along to our club for sessions of 5 hours of fun and basketball, these camps are based on fun, movement, team participation and basketball skills.

Derby Trailblazers Basketball Club Community Coaching offer a range of coaching options. We are currently booking sessions for the next academic term.  

We provide qualified coaches who deliver community coaching projects across the local area. For the children, it is a unique experience being coaches by an elite athlete and also having the opportunity to then go and watch them play in a game or read about them in the local paper. We are very proud of the work we do in the local community and our players find being a role model to children both rewarding and enjoyable. 

All of our coaches hold a Level 2 Coaching Certificate, First Aid, safeguard training and hold a current DBS.

After School and Lunch Time Clubs In Primary Schools

16 primary schools across the city which includes: Firs Primary, St James Primary, St John Fisher, Arboretum Primary, Sawley Juniors, St Edward’s C of E Primary School, Oakwood Junior School, Landue Forte Primary, Bemrose Primary, Alvaston Primary, Derwent Junior School, St Peter’s Primary, Hemington Primary, Long Whatton Church of England Primary & Hardwick Primary.

We coach various year groups at each school and have had 800 participants to date!

Curriculum and after school sessions in Secondary Schools

6 Secondary Schools across the region including Murray Park School, Noel Baker School, West Park School, Merrill School, Bemrose Secondary School, Heanor Gate

We offer classroom and curriculum support sessions and after school clubs and teams across a range of year groups with over 400 participants already having had the opportunity to enjoy our great game!

Basketball and Multi Sports Festivals

We have been involved at:

Derby Arena, Derby Tennis Centre, Pride Park Football Stadium, Willows Leisure Centre and & Noel Baker School.

Students from over 30 different schools have attended and thoroughly enjoyed these festivals, with over 900 participants telling us how much they have enjoyed themselves!

Youth Clubs / Community Outreach Sessions

Sessions delivered at Derwent Youth Centre, Marketon Park, and Stockbrook Youth club specifically aimed at deprived areas and those socially excluded.

We have had 80 participants to date and  are determined to offer further opportunities and support.  

Holiday Camps

We have run holiday Camps at Noel Baker School, Marketon Park and Broomfield College during the various school holidays.

The camps have been a resounding success, with over 200 participants to date!

Once again, this upcoming season Derby Trailblazers will deliver a thriving community coaching programme throughout the city and the surrounding areas. We have a host of coaches that go into schools working with young kids, providing quality coaching and for many, their first real taste of basketball. The Community Coaching team are always extremely busy and many of the young players you will see this season wearing a Derby Trailblazer Jersey were spotted and encouraged to join a team while taking part in one of our community sessions. We were praised by The City Council for our work on the THISISDERBY project which saw our team deliver in several schools including St John Fisher, Merrill, Bemrose Primary, Redwood, Hardwick and Markeaton Primary. In addition, we also provided a variety of sessions at Bramblebrook Community Centre and Derwent Youth Club and we also did taster sessions at several sporting festivals including venues such as Pride Park, Derby Tennis Centre, Willows and the Market Place. While basketball was at the heart of what the participants enjoyed as part of the THISISDERBY project, our coaches are tasked with providing a variety of other intangible skills to the partakers. Some of these skills included, self-control, discipline, honesty, integrity, self-confidence and leadership. We also tried to embed attributes like respect and empathy as part of the clinics. It’s amazing how well these talents can be developed while playing sport and we are very proud of the impact our community coaching programme had on the young people of Derby during this initiative.

To assist in the delivery of the programme, we are already working in partnership with DSSP, DCCT and DCFC Kicks Programme.
