Trailblazers’ Women start National League season with Worcester win

Derby Trailblazers Womens D2 Team

Derby Trailblazers Women got off to the perfect start in WNBL division two with a dramatic 66-65 away win over Worcester Wolves, a side which had finished third in their division last season.

Worcester Wolves 65 (23, 39, 53)
Derby Trailblazers 66 (21, 37, 50)

The first quarter saw the Trailblazers get off to a slow start and Worcester led by eight points after the opening five minutes. However, a spirited second five minutes saw the Blazers run the break well led by Miya Kelly and Derby were able to cut the Worcester lead to just a single point at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter saw a mirror image of the first. Worcester jumped out to an early lead before the Blazers adjusted the defence and started to control the defensive boards. Again the lead was cut to two points going in to the half time break.

The second half saw Derby setting the tone early. Some excellent post passing by Amanda Davis allowed our guards to score easily inside our offence. Alex Haley also showed great handles throughout the game and was able to feed Miya Kelly and Darcie Ashley on the wings to score in transition.

As the fourth quarter got underway, both struggled to score in the early stages. However, it was Derby who got the first break through and they were able to open up a six point lead with three minutes to go.

This was all on the back of Alex Haley’s dominance with ball in hand. Some clutch outside shooting and missed opportunities by the Trailblazers saw Worcester reduce the lead to one point with a minute to go, but a spirited end to the game and some tough defence meant Derby were able to get the stop they needed and come away with their first ever win as a programme.

“This was the team I see week in week out,” exclaimed a delighted Head Coach Leanne Chandler.

“We played how I know we can play and I couldn’t be happier with the contrast from last week. We defined the word “team” in this game as every single player gave something. We hustled, we played smart and we worked hard for each other.

“I asked the team to be better than last week but they gave me more than that. They deserved this win and we will enjoy it before getting back to work this week.

“It was great to see three players in double figure points. We need that distribution to be successful.

“Alex Haley, Darcie Ashley and Miya Kelly led our break this game but it wouldn’t have been possible without the tough boards from Kathryn Pooley and Amanda Davis, the great handles from Kehnde Hamilton and Chedell Cruickshank and the finishing from our scorers,” she said.

The Trailblazers return to action on Sunday 4th November, when they travel to Northamptonshire Titans. The match at Weavers Leisure Centre tips off at 3:30pm.
